Written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto, Chainsaw Man is currently set for a highly anticipated adaptation by animation studio MAPPA. The trailer which was released by MAPPA on June 27, 2021, showcased gory glimpses and violent premises keeping the fans very excited.
Chainsaw Man is set in a world where devils are born from human fears but can form contracts with humans to allow them to use a portion of their power. Here are some of the most interesting characters of Chainsaw Man.
Denji
First and foremost we obviously have the main character. Denji is both brash and naive as a result of being unable to have a formal education and socialize due to living in severe poverty. His personality comes off as rude and harsh in an almost childish way. His simplistic attitude and motivation mostly for perverted things are often frowned upon. But those qualities are also what separates him from the crowd of shonen protagonists and provides the unique factor that makes the manga so irresistible.
Power
Power is a Blood Fiend and a Public Safety Devil Hunter who is part of Makima’s special squad. As a blood fiend form, Power has the appearance of a young woman with strawberry blonde hair that reaches down to her mid-back. In her Blood Devil form, she appears as a tall humanoid with four arms and a mostly white body. With her bombastic personality and iconic design, complete with small horns and fangs, Denji’s partner, Power quickly became the manga’s most beloved character.
Makima
The most cunning and manipulative person to ever exist is none other than Makima, a public safety human hunter who takes Denji as her pet. There’s something really creepy about Makima and her treatment of her underlings which makes her the most interesting character. Ruthless and normally emotionless, she will do whatever it takes to reach her goals, even at the cost of the people she should be protecting.
Aki Hayakawa
Aki, Denji’s fellow devil hunter generally appears to be a very stoic person. He acts mature and dependable when he’s with his fellow Devil hunters, but is actually very soft when he is alone. He’s far more serious and reserved than Denji, with the two initially having a combative relationship, and his motivation is revenge for what he suffered during his tragic backstory.
Reze
Reze is one of those hard to figure out characters. Reze, also known as Lady Reze, is a Bomb Devil hybrid from the Soviet Union and ally to the Gun Devil. She is the primary antagonist of the titular Bomb Girl arc. Reze initially appears to be a kind and gentle girl who has a crush on Denji soon after meeting him. Her true personality is manipulative and brutal, as she is shown killing many Devil Hunters without care or mercy. She does, however, not enjoy killing and prefers to avoid it, unless necessary for her mission.
Quanxi
Quanxi, also known as The First Devil Hunter is a renowned devil hunter from China. Despite often seeming quite emotionless, Quanxi does have a softer side, and she is willing to do anything to protect her girlfriends. Quanxi is ruthlessly pragmatic in combat, preferring to throw her enemies outside of the battlefield in order to efficiently cut down their numbers and remove distractions.
Angel Devil
There are many devils introduced in the series, but none are fleshed out as much as the Angel Devil, who immediately catches readers’ eyes with his decidedly non-devilish indeed, downright angelic appearance. The Angel Devil is a unique case among devils having virtually no hostility towards humans. He considers himself to be a devil first and an angel second, stating that he believes humans ought to die in pain.
Kobeni Higashiyama
Kobeni Higashiyama was a Public Safety Devil Hunter who started as a new recruit working under Makima’s experimental squad. Her sense of fear causes her to take drastic action in order to save herself such as turning on Denji and threatening him at knifepoint once a devil promised to free her in exchange for Denji’s life.
Himeno
When it comes to side characters, Himeno, Aki’s partner and mentor is one of those who win the hearts of the readers without being in the center of the story. Her laid-back attitude offers a contrast to Makima’s perfect poise and shows both Denji and the readers that there’s definitely room for levity in the Public Safety Devil Hunters.
