Grand Theft Auto is one of the most recognizable franchises in the gaming industry. Rockstar Games’ Magnum Opus, Grand Theft Auto V released in 2013 and instantly became a huge hit. Topping sales charts year after year, the game has retained it’s massive player base thanks to its unique online mode.

Rockstar continues to support the game by releasing regular content updates. The game also went free-to-play for a week on the Epic Games Store earlier this year, introducing a new wave of players. This has led to many questions regarding the game’s cross-platform support.

Is Grand Theft Auto Online Cross-Platform?

Currently, Grand Theft Auto V does not have any cross-platform support. Players can interact with and form parties only with other players on the same platform. The game is available on the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Next-generation versions of the game have already been announced and will release in the near future.

This creates a strong case for adding cross-platform support to the online mode of Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar has not promised any future plans for cross-platform features. Its latest game, Red Dead Redemption 2 also doesn’t have any cross-platform support as of now.

The only tangible reasoning that we can come up with is some of the discrepancies in its versions. The game’s PC version allows for a plethora of mods while the consoles have a more locked game in that regard. Tackling this problem will require a lot of resources and changes to the game’s online systems which can have some negative receptions in the community. Rockstar is playing a safe game by letting the game be in its current state and focusing on delivering consistent new content.

The next generation of gaming is upon us and brings with it the idea of blurring boundaries. Many developers have taken to including cross-platform play in their games and this should also nudge Rockstar to implement it in its games.
