Sony has been eerily quit about the scope of backwards compatibility on PS5 ever since its reveal.

Although there have been indications that PS4 games maybe fully backwards compatible with the PS5, there hasn’t been any confirmation for earlier PlayStation titles.

However if this new patent by Sony is any indication, we may be receiving backwards compatibility for the PS3, PS2 as well PS1 games, just not in the way we may have expected.

First acknowledged by Renka_Schedule over Twitter, this patent which was filed this year will enable game emulation of the PS1, PS2 and PS3 titles over cloud streaming.

Here’s the translated text for the tweet above-

A large number of game titles across PS1/PS2/PS3 and various generations of game consoles can be stored and used via the cloud gaming library.

These games can be run on a virtual machine that mimics the operating system associated with each game console.

There’s no confimation from Sony’s side as to whether this feature will be a part of PS5 or will only be available to Sony’s streaming service- PS Now.

Whatsoever be the case, it will be exciting to replay those classic titles such as Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill 2, etc.

Hopefully we will hear more about this feature as we approach PS5’s launch later this year. Speaking of PS5, you should also check out our list of all the first party games confirmed so far for the PS5 here before making your purchase.
