Makoto Shinkai, the director of critically acclaimed anime such as Your Name and Weathering With You may have teased his next movie.
Shinkai took to Twitter to post a sketch that looks to be of a dockyard stating, “Recently, I’ve been staying in my room and drawing storyboards, but my eyes are more blurred and harder than in the previous work. Kita … lol.”

While it’s unclear whether the sketch is actually of the next project from his team at CoMix Wave Film Studio or just a random sketch, it is enough to get the fans excited. Twitter user “Rurilo55738974” expressed their regard by stating, “You’re making a new movie! I’m looking forward to it! I think it can be difficult, but please do your best and support us!”
Judging from Shinkai’s last few movies, the release window difference seems to be three years. If the studio continues to follow a similar schedule then the next major release may be some time in 2022. Of course, all of this may change due to the on-going pandemic that has forced everyone to work from home.
Makoto Shinkai’s last movie was 2019’s Weathering With You that received universal acclaim from critics and fans worldwide. As of July 2020, the movie has grossed over $193.1 million globally. The Blu-Ray and the DVD version of the movie released on September 15, 2020, while a 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray version is scheduled to release on November 17, 2020.
