MMOs—a genre that has always been in a dire state, even with millions of eager players, is one of the best genres among all, with its own dedicated community and player base. What makes MMOs a great genre is the experiences they offer, which you can enjoy with your friends, or make new ones while playing the game and meeting with other players.
Since the new year is here, I decided to make my recommendation list for the best MMOs to play with friends in 2024.
Note
I have listed MMOs that have already been released. So no Throne & Liberty or such upcoming MMOs. Albeit, once new MMOs come out this year, I will be playing them and if they are good, I will add them to this list. That said, in this list, I won’t be talking about the different features of the games, but instead will be sharing my opinion based on my experience with the games.
New World
New World is one of the top picks if you are looking for an MMO to play with your friend. Why? Whether it is questing or doing side activities or any other thing in the overworld, New World offers a great experience.
The best part of why it’s one of the top games to play along with friends is because of the PvP aspect. Usually, when I try out different MMOs with my friends, we have a difficult time sharing quests and doing the same activity due to some wired progression-related blockade.
But, when we tried New World last year, things were real smooth. We played it as a Co-Op game, rather than an MMO, and we had a blast. The game is grindy. But is that bad? I mean MMOs are grindy, but what makes seperates a good grind to a bad one, in my opinion, is the rewards, which New World has a lot to offer.
Fallout 76
Fallout 76 is by far my top recommended MMO to players who haven’t yet tried the game. You have to play it. I have more than 1800 hours in the game across PS4, PS5 and PC with multiple accounts. I have been playing Fallout 76 since its launch, and if you had asked me if it was a great MMO to play with friends back in 2018, I would have said NO.
While I have been enjoying the game a lot since launch, I know many players don’t like empty game worlds filled with repetitive things, and you always have that, “Ah, there’s no human NPC blah blah.” Well! Now, there are a ton of unique NPCs, events, quests, and other activities that you can enjoy with friends.
Destiny 2
Ah! Destiny 2. Yes! It is a great MMO that offers a ton of engaging content that you can enjoy with your friends. The Raids and Dungeons, in particular, are some of the best activities. But, it has a very greedy microtransaction system in place. You pay for literally everything, even content (Yes, Bungie, we are talking about the stupid Dungeon Keys.). So, unless you and your friend are fine about spending hundreds of dollars, you may wanna try out other games in this list.
Elder Scrolls Online
ESO has always been one of the MMOs that I played with my friends for a while because it offers a great story, visuals, an expansive open world, one of the best housing systems, and slow-paced combat that will give you the vibes of Skyrim and other Elder Scroll games.
Now, I will be honest here: ESO is a great MMO to play with friends, but to me, once in a while, I get a high urge to play it with my friends. But after a few weeks, I get bored with it and move to either Destiny 2, Fallout 76 or New World.
Warframe
Warframe is an MMO that I, unfortunately, haven’t spent much time with, but my friend, who has a ton of hours in the game requested me to add it to the list. According to him, if you are looking for an action role-playing third-person shooter MMO to play with your friends, Warframe is a great free-to-play choice.
World of Warcraft
Even though World of Warcraft is a very old MMO, with the new additions and changes and upcoming content planned for the year 2024, it is a great MMO that you should experience with your friends.
