As this generation of games comes to a close, we’ve decided to look back on the top 10 pc games that kept us glued to the screen for hours on end. We’ve included the games that released on PC from 2013 to the present day(2020). Also, we are not including multiplayer games which we may cover in a future list. So, here’s the list of top 10 PC single-player games of this generation in no particular order.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 is the latest entry in the Witcher series. Developed by CD Projekt Red and based on the novels of  Andrzej Sapkowski,  the game revolves around the protagonist Geralt Of Rivia trying to save Cirilla from the Wild Hunt.

Although you may never even concern yourself with completing the main quest as the game is filled to the brim with side quests which are just as good as the main quest. The game also has 2 expansion packs or DLCs which add more and more quality content for you.

The game was also praised heavily by the critics upon its launch back in 2015 and received much Game Of The Year awards as well.

Doom Eternal

In the modern age of regenerating health bars and cover shooters, id Software finally decided to go back to the basics and show everyone why First Person Shooters are fun, to begin with. They released the Doom reboot in 2016.

The game avoided all of the modern first-person staples that we’ve come to expect from first-person shooters. Health pickups, no reloads, open levels made the game distinct and fun.

Doom Eternal, the sequel to this game builds upon the foundation and evolves it into one of the best single-player shooters around by adding more gameplay variety into the mix.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

To be honest, this was a close one between Dark Souls 3 and this one. Finally, we decided to go with Sekiro because of its excellent, revamped combat system and the addition of stealth elements.

The game is set in Feudal Japan and follows you, a shinobi on a quest to rescue your master, the Divine Heir. It gives you more vertical space to explore, unlike other Soulsborne games.

The game also gives you a prosthetic arm that can be fitted with tools hidden in the world to give you an edge over your enemies and a resurrection mechanic. Don’t worry, the game still retains the controller-shattering difficulty which we’ve come to know and expect from FromSoftware titles.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a pinnacle in open-world game design. Made by Rockstar Games, the ones who are most famously known for the Grand Theft Auto series. The game is set in late 19th century America. You take on the role of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw chased by lawmen throughout the country.

The world is vast and expansive with a lot of variety. It is immaculately detailed. The same amount of detail transitions into the gameplay loop as well to the extent that some people might consider it tedious but in my opinion helps us to connect more with the game world.

The characters are distinct and likable, the side content’s quality and the music’s great. Overall, it’s a quality game that shows how to do vast and expansive open-worlds right.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V is the latest entry in the original stealth series made by Hideo Kojima. The game follows the honestly-confusing and the overarching narrative of Solid Snake and his adventures. It is set in Afganistan and gives you a vast open-world to explore.

Most of the game involves sneaking around military bases which with the addition of new tools and allies, feels better than ever. The game takes a deep nosedive in quality after the First Act because Kojima had to leave Konami.

However, whatever’s in there is worth your time whether you’re new to the series or a long time fan.

Hitman 2

The new Hitman games double down on what made the prior game’s fun, to begin with. The games take you to scrumptious locales and give you open-ended maps to carry out your killing business. The options are virtually limitless and extremely re=playable.

You can also find opportunities by exploring the level thoroughly. Following the clues will unlock a special kill which is deeply satisfying to pull off. The story’s a weak link but it’s not the reason why we play them in the first place.

Our choice for this list is the second game because it gives more of the fun and freedom. Also, you can play the first game’s levels in higher detail by downloading the Legacy Pack.

Celeste

Celeste is a hidden gem of a game that we had to include in our top 10 PC games of this generation list. It follows the tale of self-discovery of a girl named Madeline. The goal is to climb a mountain. A 2D platformer with great 16-bit graphics, the game tackles many themes of mental health and anxiety amazingly.

The movement and jumping are tight. Unlike other platformers, the levels don’t have too many toys and hooks to play with. But whatever mechanic it introduces, it pushes it to its limits which places it in a plane of its own.

The game is difficult but also comes with accessibility options including invincibility just in case you want to play the game only for the story which is completely fine.

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 is a complete remake of the 1998 classic. You take on the role of Leon or Claire as you figure out the mysteries surrounding the infamous Racoon City incident. The game has gorgeous graphics and a close up third-person camera ensuring you always up close to the character giving a better sense of immersion in the game.

It perfectly gives a feeling of desperation and helplessness by making the ammunition and supplies scarce and facing you against bullet-sponge enemies. Mr. X is also one of the most iconic bosses in all of the video games. Although  Resident Evil 7 is an incredible RE game of its own, we decided to go with RE2 as it appeals more to the veteran fans of the series.

Grand Theft Auto V

Rockstar is the king when it comes to giving players an open-world worth sinking thousands of hours into. Grand Theft Auto V is no exception. The game is a satire on American culture. You play as three protagonists Michael, Trevor, and Franklin who perform heists for a living. The game has a beautiful and rich open-world with distinct and likable characters.

The end goal is to pull off their dream heist which is referred to as the Big One. The game also has countless mods and a huge multiplayer mode which adds more value to a game that is already bursting with things to do. Grand Theft Auto V on PC  is this generation’s one of the biggest feats which shouldn’t be missed out by anyone.

Devil May Cry 5

This is the latest entry in the long-running hack and slash series by Capcom. The game features three characters, Dante, Nero, and V. The story isn’t anything special but it doesn’t have to be. The real meat of the game is, however, the combat system, which is better than ever with more tools at your disposal.

The visuals are great and the boss fights are epic. The game also has great replayability value, thanks to a rank system that pushes you to get to the S rank. Overall, it’s a pretty polished and challenging game that may very well be the best in the series.

This concludes our top 10 pc games list. Feel like we missed out on anything? Be sure to tell us in the comments. For more gaming and anime news, stay tuned to the Profaned Otaku.
