Dark Souls, the game which separates the men from the noobs. It’s not the game your average Joe plays when he comes back from work. I know many who’ve completed the game but still don’t have an idea what the game is even about. It’s okay considering FromSoftware is known for hiding most of the game’s information away behind cryptic character dialogues and item descriptions.

The History Of Dark Souls

The game’s story is vast and can be difficult to explain thoroughly in an article but I’ll try my best. For prerequisites, understand that every beginning has an end. So in the beginning, the world was covered in fog and was ruled by the immortal dragons. This was the age of dragons. Without explanation, fire simply appeared.

It brought with itself the idea of contradictory forces such as light and dark, heat and cold, life and death. Thus, beings started to appear on the surface. 4 of them found souls of immense power, namely the Grave Lord Nito, Lord Gwyn, the Witch Of Izalith and her daughters and Furtive Pygmy.

With this newfound power, these lords challenged the everlasting dragons. With the help of a traitor dragon Seath who revealed to the lords the source of their immortality, the lords defeated the dragons and brought in the age of fire.

The Age Of Fire

The age of fire was the golden period where humanity flourished. The lords built up great kingdoms and everything was pretty good for a while. But just like I said before, every beginning has to have an end. The flame that started the age of fire begins to fade.

The undead curse runs rampant and turns everyone hollow who gets afflicted with it. Now Lord Gwyn has to do something to stop all of this. Lord Gwyn sacrifices his soul to extend his age of fire.

But of course, this again is a temporary solution which means the fire will fade again and it’s up to someone to rekindle the flame.

Where You Come In

The fire is fading again and you are the chosen undead. Your job is to journey through the kingdom and defeat the 4 lords and offer their lord souls to get to the kiln of the first flame.

Then you have to defeat Lord Gywn in his hollowed form to accomplish this. After slaying the lord, you can sacrifice yourself to extend the age of fire or let the flame die out and usher in the age of dark while you become the Dark Lord of the Prophecy.

Here comes the most interesting part. If you rekindle the flame, it will die out again and the whole process will be repeated forever. If you choose to embrace the dark side, the ashes and embers will reunite and form the next flame which kickstarts the cycle all over again.

All the games in the series have the same basic idea and the questlines. The above story is just the tip of the iceberg and if you would like to know more about the lore of the games.there’s a great YouTube channel by the name of VaatiVidya which does just that. So this is the end of the short lore about dark souls in 500 words(kind of).
